WP Super Cache Does Not Work with GoDaddy Hosting

This blog had just experienced some slight downtime. After reading Jeff Atwood’s “Behold WordPress, Destroyer of CPUs”, I, too, wanted to prepare for the spike in visitors should I get on the front page of Digg tomorrow (heh). Anyway, I installed WP Super Cache, and got the following error:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in .../wp-config.php on line 20

I checked wp-config.php and saw that the last line was munged. Somehow my wp-config.php had gotten corrupted. Luckily my friend Ady was online and he helped me repair it. After I fixed that, I hit the infamous:

HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error

Actually Ady had already warned me that WP Cache doesn’t work with GoDaddy hosting. WP Super Cache is based on WP Cache, so no joy for me …

Anyway, a reminder for those of you planning to install WordPress plugins: at the very least, first backup wp-config.php and .htaccess before you do anything.

Truthfully on a normally configured server this plugin helps a lot! Database queries are dramatically minimized.
