What a difference “a” makes

An “a” can make the difference between having enough money to go overseas, and going hungry.

An example of the former from “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel:

Only I was feeling restless. And I had a little money … So I flew to Bombay …

An example of the latter from “Goldsmith - the Vagabond” in “English Literature for Boys and Girls” by H.E. Marshall:

But he had little money, and what he had was soon spent, and at last, almost starving, having lived for three days on a shilling, he turned homewards again …
