Pride and Prejudice

I just finished Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice for the second time, paying close attention to the language this time round. (The first time I read it was about a decade ago). I love it. I wonder what makes it so good, compared to today’s chick-lit?

I don’t think it’s the storyline. It might be a bit complicated by today’s standards; however I consider it to be still quite straightforward. Of course, the language is flowery, but that’s just how it was. I guess it’s plain old (no pun intended) good storytelling. In addition, we do get a taste of early nineteenth century English social convention which is somehow very amusing when seen in today’s light.

Some things never change, though: jealousy and competition between neighbours; intimacy between sisters; small town gossip; and every woman’s yearning for a tall, rich, handsome but arrogant man to fall in love with her and to shower her with tender love and affection.

I had that book when I was in secondary school, forgotten how old. I bought it because I think victorian fashion is nice, but I didn’t finish the book, not even half :D
