Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is out - with not much fanfare.

Yes, we hate Microsoft because they’re a monopoly and because they’re rich. (OK, so maybe hate might be too strong a word. But at the very least there’s definitely no rooting-for-the-underdog feeling for them).

However you’ve got to have some pity for Microsoft. In the age of Facebook, iPhones and AdSense, no matter how hard they try, they can no longer seem to do anything significant. Boatloads of people spent thousands of hours trying to develop a worthy successor to XP. They have failed. Droves of developers poured lots of time and effort into Visual Studio 2008. I’m sure it’s very good. Unfortunately not many people care, because there’s PHP and Ruby and Javascript with which to develop mind-blowing web applications. For desktop software, DIY programmers - and Joel Sposlky - prefer VB6, because VB6 programs are easy to develop, a cinch to deploy, and the end user doesn’t care what language or platform you use anyway.

I guess Microsoft really needs to do something totally different, instead of merely improving upon existing products, in order to get people excited about them again.
