Kopi O

My uncle has gotten me hooked on kopi O; instant coffee now tastes terrible and I no longer take Nescafe.

The best kopi O in Malaysia is Kopi Pa’ Pin from Bukit Mertajam (which happens to be said uncle’s hometown). It manages to be just nice in an understated sort of way. Comparing it against the more commercialized brands, extra attention to detail is discernible, due perhaps to its small-scale production.

Unfortunately I’m too lazy to brew my own so I go for those that have been packaged teabag-style. I’ve tried three so far: Aik Cheong, Sin Sing and Hang Tuah.

Aik Cheong is flavourful. I find it a bit too much though to be taken daily. Sin Sing on the other hand is quite anonymous and this lack of character is offset by extra caffeine. Hang Tuah comes in two varieties, Liberica and Robusta. I bought a packet of the former and it’s good. I don’t know if I want to take a risk and buy a whole packet of the other variety, now that I like what I’ve found.

Update 26 December 2007: Liberica is bettter than Robusta.

Thanks for sharing. Will try to remember that next time I’m in Malaysia. Too bad about the Nescafe though. That’s MY favourite.

Hi Rizal, my fried missed the Hang Tua KOPI-O(Tin). Can you recommend me, where I can get it? I search around my area, seem hard to get both of Liberica and Robusta. Btw, I am staying nearby Mines Wonderland.

Hi Elinkz, I got my Hang Tuah Kopi O at TMC Bangsar. Try looking for it at the nearest Giant. According to Tuah Marketing Corp Sdn Bhd (03 4256 8043), it’s sold at “all supermarkets over the whole of Malaysia”.
