Effortful Study

An article in Scientific American states that “… what matters is not experience per se but ‘effortful study,’ which entails continually tackling challenges that lie just beyond one’s competence.”

One might think that the field of software development offers ample room for exertion: witness the plethora of programming languages, frameworks and methodologies that are continually being introduced. But learning a new language or implementing a new framework for the first time would not represent a challenge to a software developer who keeps approaching problems in the same way. I would say that effortful study for a software developer means constant application of new ways of thinking, whether in coding, software design or requirements gathering.
