Books, the ultimate luxury
In my next post I’ll be doing a very short review of Silas Marner by George Eliot. But before that I’d like to talk about why I’m reading a book published in 1861.
Books in Malaysia are expensive. That’s my #1 peeve. (My #2 peeve is that cars in Malaysia are expensive. Can’t think of a #3 peeve.) So you’re going to ask: why don’t I go to a library? Okay. Where? Jalan Tun Razak? Way too far. How about renting books? Okay. Where? I don’t live in PJ.
So I don’t know where to get books that aren’t from MPH or Kinokuniya. On the other hand, I can’t afford books that are from MPH or Kinokuniya. Which leaves me with Penguin Popular Classics which go for around RM8.50 apiece. And that’s why I’m reading books published in the century before the last.
