Adobe AIR: The Future?

My friend showed me Adobe AIR. He’s quite excited about it; he claims that this is going to be really big. What is it? Basically it’s something that you install on your machine, on which applications can run. So? The astounding part is that AIR applications can be written in HTML and Javascript. This means that the same codebase can be used for both web and desktop applications. It’s also cross-platform. Ever heard of write once run anywhere? Well, maybe this time it’s for real. Java for the desktop didn’t really take off perhaps due to it’s off-putting UI and cumbersome development. AIR may yet lick these two problems.

One question. If it’s so good, how come not many people have heard of it? After all, everyone knew about Java when it was launched. Is it just lack of promotion?

Anyway, see for yourself by reading Adobe’s blurb. You might also want to install AIR and download a sample application. (AIR applications have an .air extension. After you have installed AIR, simply double-click on an .air file to run).
