FileZilla - Zero-Price GPL FTP Client
Downloaded, tried out, and immediately switched to FileZilla. It queues! Where have you been hiding? Or have I been Googling the wrong keywords this whole time?
Before this I used AceFTP 3 Freeware. It has a small advertisement tucked away at a corner and it nags you to buy the commercial version every time you close the application. Otherwise it’s pretty OK - it resumes, and it has a keep-alive function. One day, as I was clicking “Yes” to the ZoneAlarm prompt when firing up AceFTP - giving AceFTP permission to connect to the Internet - it suddenly struck me that I have no idea what AceFTP is transmitting back to base. I launched AceFTP again, this time saying “No” to the ZoneAlarm pop-up. The advertisements stopped, but I couldn’t connect to any server. So AceFTP is saying, “block our ads, and we’ll block you.” But even without this restriction, I don’t like the idea of letting it phone home every time I use it.
I believe that FileZilla, being open source, would surely be pure and clean.
FileZilla has the following features:
- Auto resume and keep-alive
- Transfer queue (plus the ability to transfer multiple files at once)
- “On-server” edit
- Site profiles
- “Quick connect” if you can’t bother to create a site profile for a one-time transfer
What FileZilla couldn’t do is to connect to multiple servers, but you can always start another instance of FileZilla.
